REALLY enjoyed this post, Ian. I've experienced many of the same things you described exactly. And I agree that the style of the text is a tremendous factor. I've found that in general, the more natural the text, the more difficult to memorize, whereas more stylized text (or text in verse) is easier.
I'm definitely going to try your advice about running through it in the performance space in the future.
