Orgy of the Dead, from Frank Cwiklik & Michele Schlossberg (formerly of Danse Macabre Theatrics,, now of Do What Now Media), which Berit and I saw on Monday, was a lot of fun. I was in the original 2002 production of this adaptation of a Ed Wood-written mid-60's nudie dancer movie at Surf Reality, which was an enjoyable campy trifle, but Frank and Michele have spiffed it up and expanded it into a lot more of a spectacle at The Red Room. The burlesque numbers are a mixed bag (I was particularly fond of Madame Rosebud as "The Matador's Mistress" and Jessica Savage as "Jungle Girl"), but the comedy generally works (though be warned, Frank & Michele -- and I for that matter -- seem to find repeated dumb jokes followed by uncomfortable silence or crickets chirping a lot funnier than most people). Josh Mertz and Matt Gray are as great as ever at, respectively, over-the-top showbiz camp and stolid, wooden-hero camp. Scarlet O'Gasm and Carolyn Demisch, neither of whom I've never seen before, match Josh and Matt very well. Frank's lights and sound are as good (and in the latter case LOUD -- some of the actors need to project better to be heard over them) as ever, and he has added some excellent video projections to his bag of tricks. Check it out, if you even slightly think you might possibly enjoy this, I'm positive you will.

Last night, we saw the last show of Lisa Ferber's Bonbons for Breakfast, directed by Ivanna Cullinan, at The $ellout Festival, so recommending it would come rather late. In case it comes back, though, well, we liked this one, too, though I think it might actually benefit either from cutting or expanding -- probably the latter, as it feels like it's building towards some kind of screwball comedy climax in which the seven characters actually meet and interact (as it is, almost all the scenes are two-handers, with one or two trios, maybe). Alyssa Simon and Maggie Cino, both of whom were in my show at the same time, are excellent as always (Alyssa thanked me afterward for being in the front row and laughing; she has no idea how much I held back my laughter at her dazed, slightly-different repetitions of the phrase "I have a television set!" -- I was afraid that I would laugh too hard and be too distracting, three feet away from her or so). The rest of the cast was also pretty damned good, and apart from Hope Cartelli, completely unknown to me I think, which was pleasant for once.

Tonight, back at The Red Room for Can't Get Started by Tom X. Chao ("a dryly funny downtown comedian" -- New York Times!). Don't know this show, but it's Tom. I expect to laugh a lot.

Yeah, a week of comedy is what I need after closing That's What We're Here For. Then up to Maine for a couple of days of nothing but vegetating and watching funny-animal-video shows and exciting-police-chase-video shows before getting back to some grant-writing, playwriting (and rewriting, for TWWHF), sound recording, house painting, and tag-sale-organizing for a couple of weeks. And dentistry. And planning for the Havel Festival show.

Yup. Basically answer as a nice, geeky guy and you'll get Spiderman. Saying you have a thing for redheads doesn't help, I'm sure . . .
Kinda like my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th matches, though.
