Great post Ian. "Empathy does not require sympathy," is right on. A difficult line to toe, but a brave one. There are some clasic moments that help with this on-stage, namely, a character alone on stage (see Naomi Watts in her masturbation scene in the afremention Mulholland Drive), but more difficult when he/she whom we want to empathize with is hit up against a social barrier where his/her traits the audience might empathize with are hidden. But of course, I haven't read Temptation unfortunately...
