I came to NYC in 1986, and Cinema Village was a home for me for years, until I pretty well exhausted everything that came up in their repertory. I wound up living just two doors down for a couple of years, 1990-92. By that time, it had gone from a rep schedule to foreign and indie films.
I've flipped through the book you mention, as it is something of interest, and I found that generally I ether knew the films well, or I knew well already that I HAVE to get to the rest of them someday. I'll probably look at it again sometime in a bookstore, to be sure it doesn't remind me of something else I've missed.
Worst idea for a date movie? The movie I went to on MY VERY FIRST DATE EVER. 1983, 15 years old. Brian DePalma's Scarface, on its opening night. And SHE picked it! Didn't exactly help an uncomfortable first date (though we both actually LIKED the film).
