Bowie got his mismatched eyes from a childhood playground fight when his friend, George Underwood, punched him in the eye (jealousy over a girl may have been involved). The punch permanently dilated that eye, which affects the way the way its color looks -- it is actually apparently the same "color," but because of the dilation it catches light differently.
I'd wondered for years if he had problems with his sight as a result, and only found out not long ago that yes, he has problems with focus and sensitivity to light.
No hard feelings apparently -- Underwood went on to do the cover art to Bowie's Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust albums.
