Lists and Structures
Apr. 24th, 2006 02:51 pmThinking more at length on yesterday's rehearsal for That's What We're Here For (an american pageant), structural elements begin to emerge.
The idea of an overarching "story" recedes a bit in favor of even more of an episodic revue/pageant made up of several repeated elements:
A. The Large Tableaux Sequences
B. Video/Slide/Audio Transition Pieces
C. Lip-Synced Musical Numbers
D. Smaller "Apron" scenes downstage
A and C are the real "meat" of the piece in many ways, with B and D as "Knee Plays" (as Robert Wilson terms them, the "joints" connecting the larger body parts) to allow for scene changes and breathers from the more operatic Tableaux and the presentational/ironic Musical Numbers.
There still should be a constant feel of forward movement, each section acting as a commentary or expansion on the previous idea or theme or image. And we still follow the family -- Mom, Dad, Junior, Sis and Little Sis (if I include the little girl puppet I've been thinking of) -- through two days, and even into the Rapture and Heaven, so we certainly have someplace to end at.
Act I (weekday/capitalism/action/money) must have a different feel and system from Act II (weekend/religion/leisure/god), and not simply come off as a repetition of the same elements, but at the same time, there should be structural echoes. I need more video material for Act II -- I have plenty of "capitalist" short films but not a huge amount of "religion" ones. I started downloading more from the Prelinger Archive today, but haven't had a chance to look at them yet. Later tonight.
As for the October show, Temptation, in the HavelFest, I have a shortlist of actors I'd like to read for the various parts:
MEN: Fred Backus, Danny Bowes, Walter Brandes, Cory Einbinder, Bryan Enk, Matt Gray, Ian W. Hill, Robert Honeywell, Josh Mertz, Roger Nasser, Ken Simon, Douglas Scott Sorenson, Art Wallace
WOMEN: Mikki Baloy, Gita Borovsky, Josephine Cashman, Maggie Cino, Jessi Gotta, Meredith Kaunitz, Christiaan Koop, Kalle Macrides, Yvonne Roen, Alyssa Simon, Jessica Chandlee Smith
This for the 7 or 8 male roles and the 5 or 6 female roles (there will be double-casting with the smaller parts, just don't know exactly how yet). I have a feeling a few won't be interested/available and then I'll need to read them in groups to get the right mix of people.
Also, Edward might want Josephine and Ken for his Havel play, so we may have to work that out.
Okay, time to kick Berit off the other computer so I can actually finish the podcast material for Martin Denton that I've been promising him.
