It was only actually about three hours of leisure time, but it felt like a long, lovely, incredibly pleasant day at the seaside.
Here's Sarah and Timothy right around the start of the day's festivities:
There had been some worry about thunderstorms, which had been predicted to show up at 4.00 pm, right when we were all going to meet, but . . .
. . . it didn't quite work out that way.
I brought our camera, and had a fine old time shooting pictures like I haven't done in years, so, behind the cut, a giant load of shots from a lovely, fun afternoon/early evening had yesterday by Berit and I with friends.
(and this is only a third or so of the shots, all of them can be seen HERE or HERE, the latter with tags and commentary):
Timothy gets a picture of Sarah (off left) threatening to jump from the pier:
Coney Island from the pier:
The gulls were fighting over the styrofoam as though it was food, and seemed disappointed to realize it wasn't:
Coney Island is popular even on a Wednesday afternoon:
But not that popular:
Attempt at self-portrait as I watch the bags while the others wade:
This is an arrogant seagull:
Timothy already had a sunburn before this day:
Everyone went wading but me (and the damn gull):
Things left behind:
It kept looking a bit cloudy and ominous, but the promised rain never came:
While the others washed off the sand, Sarah got a call from her mom and Timothy glared:
Berit enjoyed a Blue Hawaiian (I had a Pina Colada):
The evening was cool, and the light was enjoyable:

Everyone else went on the Wonder Wheel. I did it 7 years ago. Never again:

In the temporary "Dreamland" Park that has replaced Astroland, there was a new Sideshow, and they had a bunch of animals on display to try and attract attention so they could talk you in.
Everyone was also REALLY hard-selling the games of chance both there and in Deno's Wonder Wheel Park. Berit and I are always amused when they try to play on some kind of macho pride in me by calling out that I should "win the little lady something nice!" Berit always calls back, "I'm no lady, I'm his wife!"
In Brooklyn, a possum and a lizard count as an exotic animal display:
This is me touching the gator, a beautiful animal. It was sweet and docile and I can only hope it's well, and being looked after with kindness.
Many of the Brooklyn spectators refused to believe it was real, and were positive it was stuffed -- or, when it's breathing and slight movements were pointed out, mechanical. It was quite real, and alive:
We were there late enough for it to get dusky, but not to get dark:
And everyone had to go on the Cyclone for (I think in all cases) the first time (Berit and I did it before, and stayed off):
It felt like a nice day at a seaside town:

Berit and I thought that for once we were going to avoid eating at Nathan's - which I think we've done on every single one of our Coney Island trips for the last 8 years - but the party wound up there anyway, and we got our food (more than we were hungry for, by far, as it turned out):
And I'm still impressed by the (relatively) new Coney Island subway station - the old one was a hellish mess:
Now THAT was a nice day off . . .
